Project Spotlight: Roncalli High School - Transforming a Bland Entrance into a Community Gathering Place

Many might read this title and immediately think of the bland school entrance they grew up with or the building their kids enter each morning. If that’s you, you’re not alone. When thinking of entering a high school, the words “inviting”, “gathering place”, and “multi-functional”, might not be what comes to mind. Beautiful and purposeful landscape could, for some, be more associated with residential over commercial. So, when Forest Green Lawncare came to us with their vision for the space to not just look appealing, but also be a social hub for students, functional for outdoor classroom activities, and a symbol of the school’s spirit, we were excited to take on the project.

One of the great things about landscape is, when done well, conversation and community will form around it naturally, so our goal was to, literally and metaphorically, maximize the space as much as possible. That meant also adding working with multiple elements, adding electrical access in the raised planters for classroom lessons, and working closely with the school to create a shrine for prayer that the students felt was approachable and welcoming.

Since the project was completed in 2022, the Roncalli Legacy Courtyard and Prayer Garden has become integral to the school, and has fostered a sense of pride and belonging among students, teachers, and the community alike.
